Computer Hardware Basics

The Component Tour

Every PC — desktop or laptop — is the same team of components in different clothing. Learn the players and their positions.

Key Concepts

  • CPU: cores (parallel workers) × clock speed (GHz) ≈ processing power; needs a matching motherboard socket
  • Motherboard: the chassis-wide circuit board hosting CPU socket, RAM slots, M.2/SATA storage and PCIe expansion
  • RAM: DDR4/DDR5 sticks; capacity (8/16/32 GB) determines multitasking headroom
  • GPU: renders graphics; integrated (in CPU) for office work, discrete card for gaming/design/AI
  • PSU: converts wall power; quality and wattage headroom protect every other part

Try It Yourself

Without opening anything, identify your computer's CPU cores/speed, RAM amount and storage type from system settings. Rate which one limits you most.
