Prompt Engineering Professional

Anatomy of a Professional Prompt

Expert prompts are engineered, not improvised. Nearly every high-performing prompt contains five components: role, context, task, constraints and output format.

Key Concepts

  • Role: 'You are a senior financial analyst' — activates relevant patterns and tone
  • Context: the background facts the model needs — never assume it knows your situation
  • Task: one clear instruction with an action verb — analyse, rewrite, generate, compare
  • Constraints: length, tone, audience, what to avoid
  • Format: bullet list, table, JSON, email — show the shape you want

In Practice

Practice rewriting three of your recent prompts using all five components; the quality jump is usually immediate and obvious.

Try It Yourself

Rewrite one of your recent prompts to include all five components (role, context, task, constraints, format). Run both versions and list two concrete quality differences.
